Cannabis and Cancer: Saving Sophie – Tracy Ryan’s Story

A Mom Takes On The World For Her Daughter:

The story of Sophie Isabella Ryan is an intense one, as it birthed a movement like no other by her mother – Tracy Ryan. When Sophie was just a baby at 8 months of age, her mom saw her left eye flutter, a type of periodical shaking known as Nystagmus that’s not too unusual in a developing child. The doctors didn’t think too much of it until after an MRI was done at the insistence of an ophthalmologist who was also a new mom and just didn’t feel right about what she saw. And this is where the battle began – oncologists found that little Sophie had what’s known as an OPG – a slow growing malignant tumor, that although has a high survival rate in treating with chemotherapy also has a recurrence rate at a shocking 70% meaning that the likelihood of it coming back is extremely high. Tracy had to become an overnight cancer treatment researcher and quickly was her own expert in how to treat her child. With doctors touting chemotherapy as the only option for them while also stating the tumor wouldn’t go away and would likely regrow after it was over, Sophie’s parents needed other choices. Oncologists stated that if it were to get smaller it would be a ‘huge success which was far from reassuring. Who would have known that eventually, Sophie would be the reason for the season for Tracy Ryan’s ongoing public appearances which include Ricki Lake, cannabis science events, fundraising for kids in need of all types of help, and the creator of Saving Sophie – a 501(c)3 non-profit entity with a focus on providing unlimited online educational resources to families who have been stricken by cancer, autism or epilepsy. An intense non-profit with a mission to raise funds for groundbreaking cancer research, it’s their goal to support scientists who are working towards bringing less toxic therapies to market.

In an interview with LA Weekly Tracy had quite a bit to say:  “Faced with the prospect of their daughter’s blindness, Ryan joined an increasing number of parents who are turning to cannabis to treat their children for illnesses ranging from cancer to epilepsy. After nearly two years of chemotherapy combined with highly concentrated cannabis oil, made mostly of non-psychoactive, can’t-get-you-high cannabidiol (CBD) with traces of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — Sophie’s tumor has shrunk.

“Historically with chemotherapy, you would have six months of shrinkage and then the glioma never shrinks again,” Ryan says. “Sophie’s now had 22 of 23 months where we’ve seen shrinkage. Every time [with chemo combined with cannabis oil], we kill the glioma over and over and over again. Normally, these patients have these masses their entire lives.”  Sophie’s neurologist couldn’t explain her recovery, Ryan says, but the doctor suggested that they should keep dosing with cannabis oil. Ryan first bought cannabis oil for her daughter from a Northern California maker, then switched to a product made by chemist Dr. Jeffrey Raber at his Pasadena lab, before it was recently raided by the police. In response to the challenge of finding this particular oil for Sophie, Ryan took matters into her own hands. In March 2015, she founded the parent-friendly cannabis collective CannaKids, which produces a similar oil with the help of a Northern California manufacturer. They call it Honey Gold.

“She’s the healthiest kid I know,” Ryan says, “I think it’s directly related to using Honey Gold.”

“Sophie Isabella Ryan was born October 3, 2012, perfectly healthy weighing in at 8 pounds, 7.4 ounces. Her birth had zero complications and I had the perfect pregnancy, doing everything right by way of diet and constant checkups with my OB. On June 20, 2013, Sophie had her first MRI scan after nystagmus, shaking of the eyeball, presented in her left eye. On June 23rd, at 8 ½ months old, Sophie has diagnosed with a low-grade, Optic Pathway Glioma brain tumor. My husband, Josh, and I were originally told that her only option would be a 13-month protocol of chemo in hopes to stop the development of the tumor. Since it is a slow-growing tumor, chemo was never meant to get rid of the tumor, and doctors told us if they saw even minimal shrinkage it would be considered a huge success.

At this point, after succumbing to an emotionally devastating situation, we decided to dust ourselves off and look for other ways to save our daughter outside of just Western medicine alone! After creating a Facebook page called “Prayers for Sophie,” a friend on Facebook put us in touch with Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, who were filming a documentary about how cannabis oils kill cancer in pediatric patients. I was originally inspired to try for a natural birth after watching their first documentary, The Business of Being Born, so I knew if these ladies were now focused on a film about cannabis, there had to be something to it! These women worked hard to surround us with the top oil makers and experts in California, and so our journey to healing our daughter began!

Sophie has been on high-concentrated THC and CBD cannabis oil since she started chemo in October of 2013. The only side effect she ever had was a little sleepiness that completely went away as she acclimated to the oils. Now her only side effect is hunger, which is amazing since the chemo can affect her appetite. Despite several rounds of chemo, Sophie continued to gain weight and has a great quality of life despite having chemo once a week with short breaks from time to time. Her hair has grown back, she is advancing developmentally, and despite the nine blood transfusions she has required she is otherwise very happy and healthy.

After 13 months of chemo and high doses of cannabis oil, Sophie’s brain tumor was about 85 to 90 percent gone, and a massive cyst that had formed was about 90 percent gone! We were told that chemo would also not get rid of the cyst. We were told that Sophie would go blind in her left eye and her right eye would likely be compromised. Because of the shrinkage we have seen from the use of cannabis oil, we have saved her vision, and the doctors at Kaiser Los Angeles are now in agreement that the cannabis oil has destroyed her tumor!  After an eye exam, her vision was reported to be, “That of a normal two-year-old.”

A very special thank you to Stephen Amell, and all of our amazing friends & family for all of the fundraising and financial support they have given our family.  Because of their generosity, they have inspired us to help other families the way they have helped us. Through SavingSophie.org we hope to pay it forward to those who are now in the same financial troubles we once found ourselves in.”

RECENT PRESS

Tracy Ryan has been a leader in the world of Cannabinoid Medicine for children and more, her courageous journey for Sophie has been documented very well and read by many – but I find that even the most valuable of stories and assets to the medicinal cannabis movement isn’t seen by the plethora of people who still await legalization of the whole plant or the ability to access it. It’s parents like Tracy that make a difference as when patients speak out their voices are heard but she’s taken this to a whole new level. It would take a book to write about her endless accomplishments, sacrifices, and without using a dictionary of words – her gift to the world. When we’re able to see firsthand how the plant changes and saves lives it allows us to step beyond the theories and the speculation and see with our own eyes that this plant heals. Cannabis is the answer for so many – and as a researcher, I agree that science is necessary to learn more and create better plant-based medicine – but not a reason to delay treatment with what we already know works.

Thank you Tracy Ryan – you’re a person that has made a difference and continues to!
