David Smith: Treating Scoliosis With Cannabis

Beyond Back Pain: Curvature Of The Spine:

Scoliosis is typically classified as either congenital (caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth), idiopathic (cause unknown, subclassified as infantile, juvenile, adolescent, or adult, according to when onset occurred), or neuromuscular (having developed as a secondary symptom of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, or physical trauma).  This condition affects approximately seven million people in the United States. It can and does impact the heart and lungs for most that have it just to start with. The pain and the continual inability to function as one wishes is a primary cause of depression among scoliosis patients according to the National Scoliosis Foundation.

Screening for the condition is non-invasive and takes about 30 seconds, but it doesn’t always catch the problem. If done at an early age it’s thought that with procedures and therapies severe cases can be minimalized. But, for those dealing with the pain nothing about it seems to be minimal. The foundation reports that up to 25% of patients with this will medicate with Cannabis. That number used to be in regards to alcohol which has slipped in popularity. With legalization and the movements for medicinal uses, alcohol is now thought to be undesirable to most scoliosis patients as self-medication – and good ol’ Cannabis has taken its place! With the help of nature and with early detection and proper treatment, people diagnosed with scoliosis can lead healthy, active lives. Now that all sounds just dandy until you speak to someone that actually has it!

“I’m a 5th-generation Texan, scoliosis. My first back surgery was at age 16, but by the time I hit 45 I had to have a second.” He went on and told me, “I was declared permanently and totally disabled from work.”

And this is not uncommon. Scoliosis, in severe cases like his, will permanently disable an individual generally by mid-’40s according to the foundation.  David told his tale, “I lived in California and had a great job and great disability plan, thankfully.  I was made a cannabis patient in 2008 in my chronic pain battle.” I had to go to TX for 3 1/2 years to help my family with some health and financial drama and was treated like a criminal by pain management there.

Treatment and medications are denied to cannabis users in that state.  I ended up moving my 75-year-old mother to California to live with me to make things easier.  Since returning to this legal state and having access to cannabis products one year ago, I have been able to reduce my main opioid dose by half.  This is great because the side effects on the body, especially the colon are horrific.”

David went on to tell me how he feels about prohibition, “Cannabis products help me get decent sleep and have less pain, with 18-level spinal fusion all bolted into my pelvis.  Never leaving my Blue State again!  Continuing prohibition is no less than any other  crime against humanity – our nation’s leaders should be tried before a jury of our peers!”

Disability caused by scoliosis,  as well as physical limitations during recovery from treatment-related surgery, often affects an individual’s ability to perform self-care activities.   One of the first treatments of scoliosis is the attempt to prevent further curvature of the spine.  Depending on the size of the curvature, this is typically done in one of three ways:  bracing, surgery, or postural positioning through customized cushioning.   Stopping the progression of scoliosis can prevent the loss of function in many activities of daily living by maintaining range of motion, preventing deformity of the rib cage, and reducing pain during activities such as bending or lifting.

And this is where Cannabis comes in. Many users that have this problem have reported that THC oils taken orally or vaped and even smoked cannabis brings quite a bit of relief. Others have shared their quality of life increasing with CBD “I’ve used Cannabidiol at high dosages, normally close to 100 mg. per day, and have had success in treating it. It doesn’t matter what you use because Scoliosis will cause pain day and night. I”m thinking of THC next.” Says patient Cheryl Cummings of Spokane, Washington.

Either way, you look at it, once again we’re dealing with Big Pharma and their desire to make sure we’re all hooked on something or taking something that will destroy our bodies even further.

It’s so awesome to talk to people that have reduced their pain medication as David has.  A 50% reduction means the person is now thriving and able to do things that pain medication stopped them from doing before – not just the disability.  There’s a huge misconception that people on pills to reduce the aches and pains actually like them – most do not and would change to Cannabis if given the chance.

An online poll showed a whopping 82% would and half of that number was over the age of 50. Cannabis and oils, even after the big CNN shows, are definitely not just for kids anymore!
